In pig farming, pests such as rats, mice, flies and beetles pose a serious risk to animal health, feed safety and farm performance. A well-thought-out pest prevention and control plan is therefore not a luxury, but a necessary part of any modern farm operation.
Why are pests so problematic?
Spread of diseases
Pests (rats and mice) are often carriers of pathogens such as Salmonella, Brachyspira, PRRS or EMC, which they spread through manure, urine and fur.
Infestation of feed and equipment
They foul feeders and gnaw on cables, insulation and installations, leading to damage, fire hazards or malfunctions.
Stress and reduced performance in animals
The presence of pests (oa flies) in the barn increases stress in pigs and can disrupt feeding and drinking behaviour.
